Carl Doran was born and raised on the family farm, Lot 24, Con. 2 in Midhurst. He attended S.S. No. 17 Public School on the Second Concession of Vespra. In 1923, he moved, with his older brother, to centre Vespra, and attended Barrie Collegiate Institute. During the war years, he worked fulltime in agriculture.
Carl took over the family farm when his father retired, and continued farming until 1969. When he and his wife retired, they built a new home on the corner lot of the home farm.
In 1958, he was elected to Vespra Council, where he served as Councillor, Deputy-Reeve and Reeve (1971-1974). Carl followed his father’s path when they became the first father and son to serve as Reeves of Vespra Township.
During his term on County Council, he served on a number of committees: Social Services, Homes for the Aged, Museum and Archives, Agriculture and Reforestation, Finance and Administration, and four years ont he Finance Committee of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. When the Vespra Library Board was formed in early 1970, he was one of the founding members.
After retiring from Council, he continued working, as a volunteer on many community projects: Canadian Cancer Society, the Hall Board and the Community Centre Board.
In 1983, Carl and his wife moved to Barrie; however, he still remains active in the community and District Lions Club.
