Roy Nelson Hickling was born September 1892, the son of Charles and Mary Jane (Kirkup) Hickling. He married Lydia Dobson of Grenfel in 1917 and their family numbered six sons: Charles Mathew, Gordon Roy, William Cecil, William Harold, Ray Dobson and Douglas David Allan. Roy took over his parents’ farm on their retirement in 1923, and continued farming Lot 15, Conc. 6, Vespra, with the help of his sons, until 1976, when his son, Gordon and Gordon’s wife, Alice, bought it.
Mr. Hickling was very public-minded. He was first elected to Vespra Council in 1928, and served as Councillor and then Deputy-Reeve until 1939. He was elected again to Council in 1943, where he served until 1952, the last several years acting again as Deputy-Reeve. Mr. Hickling then served as Reeve of the township from 1952-1958, and was Warden of Simcoe County in 1955.
In addition to his Council duties, he also served as secretary of the Barrie Milk Producers from 1930-1950, and was the County representative at various times on the Board of Directors of Royal Victoria Hospital, the Barrie High School Board of Education, the Ontario Wheat Board and Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
Mr. Hickling suffered a heart attack in 1960 and retired from active community work.
